It was a warm day onboard the Sunny as the Straw Hat pirates sailed along the waters of the New World. The crew were preparing to dock the ship as they approached a small island.<\/p>\n

With the anchor down, Luffy stepped out onto the pier. He couldn\u2019t help but smile when the sun hit his face. They\u2019d had a severe lack of it lately. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a group of children handing out flowers. Their eyes went wide when Luffy greeted them. \u201cYo!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re Straw Hat Luffy!\u201d a kid with curly pink hair said.<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cYup!\u201d The kid handed him a flower and then ran off; Luffy was reminded of Coby, but maybe it was just the hair. The other kids crowded the Straw Hats, yelling over one another and asking a whole lot of questions.<\/p>\n

Robin used her devil fruit powers to make room. Her arms gently encircled the children and carried them back a step, so the crew could finish disembarking.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo cool!\u201d a bunch of them yelled, followed by, \u201cHow did you do that!?\u201d and, \u201cCan you do that again? Please!\u201d<\/p>\n

Smiling, Robin summoned a pair of arms behind the children. One of the hands poked a kid on the shoulder. He immediately turned and shrieked, causing the other kids to turn around too. With the kids\u2019 attention elsewhere, the crew took the opportunity to get around them and find their footing on the pier.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the plan, Luffy?\u201d Chopper asked as they walked along the pier and onto solid pavement. The kids were in close pursuit.<\/p>\n

Luffy raised an eyebrow. \u201cPlan? Eh. I just want meat!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. \u201cFood it is then.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEh, you want meat?\u201d one of the kids asked. The other kids caught up and stood behind him. \u201cOnly royalty get to eat meat here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy was mid-moan when he was interrupted by an unfamiliar voice. \u201cI\u2019m sure we could work something out.\u201d An older man dressed in a velvet red robe with a gold sash smiled at them. He was accompanied by the pink-haired kid.<\/p>\n

The group of kids immediately straightened up and slightly bowed their heads. A series of \u201cYour Majesty\u2019s\u201d could be heard. The majority of the crew joined in with the children.<\/p>\n

When Sanji, Luffy, and Zoro didn\u2019t, Nami flicked them all. \u201cShow some respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Nami-swan,\u201d Sanji said and bowed his head.<\/p>\n

When Luffy didn\u2019t oblige, she whispered, \u201cYou might get meat if you do.\u201d That had Luffy following orders immediately. Zoro frowned but followed, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, now. Less of that,\u201d the older man said. He approached Luffy. \u201cYou must be Straw Hat Luffy. I am King Novo of the Novon tribe and island. It is nice to meet you.\u201d He extended his hand.<\/p>\n

Luffy lifted his head and shook King Novo\u2019s hand. \u201cCan we have m\u2014\u201c Luffy began, but was interrupted by Sanji\u2019s hand going over his mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to meet you, too,\u201d Sanji said. \u201cOur captain was just wondering where we could find something to eat.\u201d Luffy licked Sanji\u2019s hand. Sanji grimaced and pulled away. Usopp and Chopper looked to one another, their cheeks puffed up as they tried to muffle their laughter. It didn\u2019t work. Sanji narrowed his eyes on them, effectively draining all their laughter.<\/p>\n

King Novo nodded. \u201cOf course. It would be our pleasure to have you dine with us for dinner. Please follow me this way.\u201d He turned to the pink-haired kid. \u201cJulian, you go ahead and inform the kitchen that we have guests.\u201d Julian nodded and once again bolted off. \u201cWhat brings the Straw Hats to my fine island today?\u201d King Novo asked as they strolled through the town.<\/p>\n

There were market stalls on either side of the path. They were shabby, run-down, and void of customers. Surprisingly, they had a range of items from clothes to herbs to tools for sale, though, the majority of it looked old, covered in dust \u2014 like it hadn\u2019t been touched in years. Zoro took interest in some sharpening stones while Chopper stood awe-stricken at the range of medicinal items. One shopkeeper approached Zoro, his eyes lit up like it was his birthday. He opened his mouth, but snapped it shut and stood up straight upon seeing King Novo. Stall owners and locals alike all straightened up when King Novo passed by.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust following the log-pose,\u201d Nami eventually answered, which was mostly true, but they were also trying to lay low from Marines. Nami had intentionally steered them into bad weather; the fact they had arrived at such a warm island was sheer luck.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I see.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the distance, a castle came into focus. It was grand in size and ivory in colour. The variation of stones used to build it looked aged and its paint was chipped, but it only added to its character; it retained an air of royalty, surrounded by four tall towers and an even taller keep.<\/p>\n

Luffy whistled as they approached it. \u201cWow. That is one big castle!\u201d he said, starry-eyed. Chopper wore the same awed expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait until you see inside,\u201d King Novo said. Luffy grinned and increased his pace.<\/p>\n

When they walked across the drawbridge, Luffy\u2019s eyes widened. A moat surrounded the castle. \u201cAre there any crocodiles down there?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

King Novo chuckled. \u201cNo. That\u2019s just a popular myth. Plenty of fish dwell in there, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Usopp squealed. \u201cI just saw a huge piranha!\u201d He pointed across the moat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere!? Can I eat it!?\u201d Luffy ran to Usopp\u2019s side. He followed Usopp\u2019s finger but frowned. \u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was there. I swear!\u201d Usopp said.<\/p>\n

Sanji chuckled. \u201cCome on, you two,\u201d he said, giving them both a push.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis way.\u201d King Novo gestured towards the arched entrance.<\/p>\n

When they walked inside, they were met with a spacious courtyard. They were surrounded by high stone walls and armoured turrets.<\/p>\n

Franky rubbed his chin as he looked around. \u201cGet many visitors?\u201d The castle, despite its age, appeared to have been updated and maintained for modern weaponry to fix in. With everything from traditional cannons to robotic arrow carts, it was ready for combat.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, not really. We\u2019re a small island and we don\u2019t have much to offer, other than this castle and our shrines,\u201d King Novo said.<\/p>\n

They approached two tall doors, a deep red brown colour, like mahogany. Joining the doors was an array of locks and latches, some rusted, some shiny new. King Novo clapped his hands twice and one by one the latches undid themselves. The doors slowly swung open.<\/p>\n

There were whistles all around as the Straw Hats took in the grand yet minimalistic hall. A long dining table, with chairs, was in the middle, set up for a feast. A wide staircase lined the back wall. It went higher than they could see. The ceiling was arched and impossibly high with intricate spiral patterns that played tricks on one\u2019s eyes. An abstract mural composed of circles of blue hues covered one side of the wall, while a chunk of writing in an unfamiliar language was engraved in the opposite one. Robin approached the writing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAncient Novon?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

King Novo\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cYou can read it?\u201d he asked. Robin shook her head. King Novo sighed. \u201cAh, a pity. We lost the exact translation a few years ago, when elder Diavo passed away. But it is Ancient Novon scripture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh,\u201d Robin said. She reached out to touch the scripture, but pulled her hand back at the last second, frowning.<\/p>\n

In the corner of the room Brook spotted a grand, old-fashioned organ; its pipes were taller than Brook himself. He turned to King Novo. \u201cMay I?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, but first we shall eat,\u201d King Novo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat idea!\u201d Luffy hollered and ran to the table. Everyone took their seats. Zoro was last and, as such, was left to sit next to Luffy. Zoro wasn\u2019t too fussed, so long as his alcohol wasn\u2019t stolen, he would be fine.<\/p>\n

Footsteps echoed throughout the hall from the staircase. A young lady entered and the hall went silent. She projected elegance, dressed in a gold dress that hung off her shoulders and puffed from the waist down. She gave a slight, hesitant nod; her eyes were kind and her smile welcoming. Sanji was already getting up from his seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no. Please don\u2019t get up on my account!\u201d the lady said. She spoke clearly though her girlish voice belied her appearance.<\/p>\n

King Novo stood as well, though, and gestured to the lady. \u201cEveryone, I\u2019d like you to meet my daughter, Princess Isa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone gave a curt nod except Sanji who had gotten down on one knee and presented her the flower the kids had given them earlier. \u201cFor you, Princess,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d she said, gracious as she accepted the flower. She tucked it into the crook of her ear before she took her seat at the head of the table next to her father. \u201cIt is very nice to have some guests. Especially ones as famous as yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for having us,\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

The smell of roast beef lingered in the air and Luffy\u2019s stomach made an audible growl. Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we start?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

King Novo smiled. \u201cOf course. Eat to your heart\u2019s content!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYosh!\u201d Luffy said and immediately went for the large leg of meat in the center of the table. Zoro reached straight for the wine. It wasn\u2019t his preferred alcoholic beverage, but it would do.<\/p>\n

The Straw Hats lost themselves in the feast, hands – mostly Luffy\u2019s – flew everywhere. Any pretense of etiquette required while in the presence of royalty was long gone. The table was filled with chatter, laughter, and even arguments. Bellies were full by the time dessert came out, but, upon seeing the huge chocolate cake, they all insisted they had room for a bit more.<\/p>\n

With the food finished, Brook began to play the organ. His fingers danced over the keys, creating a slow, whimsical melody which everyone hummed along to.<\/p>\n

Luffy slouched in his chair, rubbing his bloated belly. \u201cThat was so good. I\u2019m stuffed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad,\u201d said King Novo. \u201cMeat here is a luxury; we have it imported from other islands. This island is known for its pescetarian lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEh?\u201d<\/p>\n

Princess Isa smiled. \u201cIt means we eat fish and plant-based foods, but not meat. Meat is reserved for special occasions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sanji nodded. His experience in the food industry had provided him knowledge of many diets and lifestyle choices. \u201cIs this lifestyle due to ethical reasons or because meat is hard to come by?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt dates back to the origins of our tribe. Eating meat was considered a sin. Nowadays, we\u2019re not as strict \u2014 so it is mostly due to the shortage of it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel kind of bad\u2026 Are you sure it was okay to serve us all that meat?\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

King Novo sat up straight and smiled. \u201cDo not worry, there is a way you can repay us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEh?\u201d Nami frowned and turned to Luffy. \u201cThis is coming out of your Beri.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no. We are not after your money,\u201d King Novo said.<\/p>\n

Usopp leaned forwards, hands clasped. \u201cThen what are you after?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe request that Straw Hat Luffy marry my daughter, Princess Isa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Princess Isa looked down, her cheeks red.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll marry her!\u201d Sanji said, heart-eyed, slamming his fists on the table. \u201cI would make an excellent husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. It must be Luffy.\u201d King Novo looked Luffy in the eyes. \u201cWhat do you say, Luffy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy frowned. \u201cNo way.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Novo strummed has fingers on the table. \u201cAnd if I say you have no choice?\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin coughed. \u201cLuffy cannot. He already has somebody,\u201d she said. All eyes fell onto her. She smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this true, Straw Hat Luffy?\u201d King Novo asked, his brows furrowed.<\/p>\n

Luffy nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho was so lucky to be first to your heart then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst?\u201d Luffy said. \u201cZoro was first to\u2014\u201c Zoro pinched Luffy\u2019s thigh. \u201cOw! What did you do that for?\u201d<\/p>\n

King Novo narrowed his eyes on Zoro. \u201cZoro? You are his partner?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro opened his mouth to respond when he felt someone kick his foot. He looked across the table to see all eyes on him. His jaw clenched and he forced a smile. \u201cUh\u2026 Yeah,\u201d he said and looked down at his fists. Zoro blamed the alcohol for his flushed face.<\/p>\n

King Novo crossed his arms. \u201cProve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s stupid. How are they meant to \u2018prove it\u2019?\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

\u201cKiss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro\u2019s fist on his thigh tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo way!\u201d Usopp said, crossing his arms. He sat back. \u201cPDA is gross and we\u2019re sick of seeing them kiss.\u201d Zoro mentally thanked Usopp, resourceful as ever with excuses.<\/p>\n

King Novo, however, did not look convinced.<\/p>\n

Zoro gulped but calmed when Luffy placed his hand over Zoro\u2019s. That was all the encouragement he needed. He took a deep breath and then just went for it. He grabbed Luffy by the shirt and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. When they separated, Luffy was grinning. Zoro smiled.<\/p>\n

King Novo rolled his eyes. \u201cLike that is going to convince anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro\u2019s hands went straight to his swords. \u201cWell, that\u2019s all you\u2019re getting, you perverted old man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy placed his hand on Zoro\u2019s wrist and Zoro let go of his swords. \u201cZoro\u2019s right. Besides, how does a kiss prove anything? People kiss all the time,\u201d Luffy said.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa looked up, biting her lip. \u201cAh. I must apologise on behalf of my father. Please do not be upset, he is merely looking out for the future of this island,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Franky hummed. \u201cThe island seems fine. How would marrying Luffy help?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur economy has declined due to a lack of visitors. People aren\u2019t willing to brave the stormy weather to get here. Luffy\u2019s presence would put this place on the map. It would attract visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Franky didn\u2019t look convinced. \u201cAnd the Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re on good terms with the Marines. As my husband, Luffy would be protected here.\u201d Princess Isa smiled but her eyes were downcast. \u201cBut we understand if you do not want to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIsa\u2014\u201d King Novo started, but Princess Isa shook her head, her blonde curls bounced from side to side.<\/p>\n

\u201cFather, we will figure something out,\u201d she said and turned to Luffy. \u201cYou and your crew are more than welcome to stay here a few nights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds good!\u201d Luffy said.<\/p>\n

Usopp frowned. \u201cBut Luffy\u2014\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cNo buts. We\u2019ll stay here tonight and explore the island tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Novo sighed. \u201cMy daughter is much too kind, but she is right. Do not worry yourselves about it; it is our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be some way we can help you,\u201d Nami said. She refused to part with her beri, but like her mother, Belle-mere, had always said: repay kindness with kindness.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust your presence here is enough,\u201d Princess Isa said. She clapped her hands together and stood up. \u201cI can show you to your rooms now, if you would like.\u201d Luffy nodded.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa took them up the staircase; at one point Usopp asked whether they were never ending. When they eventually reached the right floor, they were met with a long, dark hallway, dimly lit by oil lamps spaced along the walls. Oil paintings of people were hung in between.<\/p>\n

Luffy stopped in front of one of the paintings. \u201cWho\u2019s that?\u201d he asked, tilting his head. \u201cHe kind of looks like Bon Clay.\u201d Zoro came up behind Luffy to look and hummed.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me see,\u201d Usopp said and joined Luffy and Zoro. \u201cHe looks nothing like Bon Clay!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does so,\u201d Luffy insisted.<\/p>\n

Chopper approached the painting and burst out in giggles. \u201cThat\u2019s definitely not Bon Clay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sanji eyed the painting, rolled his eyes and chuckled. \u201cYou fools. Why am I not surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy shrugged while Zoro\u2019s hands went straight to his swords. \u201cWho are you calling fools, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou two. Obviously,\u201d Sanji said.<\/p>\n

Zoro moved to unsheathe his sword, but stopped when Luffy wrapped an arm around him and pulled him and Sanji in, laughing loudly.<\/p>\n

Sanji raised an eyebrow. \u201cWhat\u2019s so funny?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes you all fools for following me!\u201d Luffy said.<\/p>\n

Robin chuckled. \u201cHe\u2019s got a point,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep. No regrets from me,\u201d Franky said, grinning. He fist-bumped Luffy.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa coughed. \u201cThat door behind you caters to one couple.\u201d She looked to Luffy and Zoro. \u201cLuffy, Zoro, please make yourselves comfortable there.\u201d Sanji snickered.<\/p>\n

\u201cAct\u2014\u201d Zoro started, but stopped when Luffy grabbed his wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Zoro. Let\u2019s check it out!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Zoro shrugged, eyes glazed, though that could\u2019ve just been caused by the alcohol. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy and Zoro entered the room, leaving Princess Isa to situate the others. The room was huge. A king-size bed with a gold frame was positioned in the center and a candle chandelier hung from the ceiling. A large embroidered rug with intricate swirling patterns and gold trimming covered the floor. Two chairs, velvet red and gold-framed, sat by the window. Luffy jumped onto the bed while Zoro walked over to the window. Its red curtains were drawn. It overlooked the castle gardens.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, this bed is so comfy,\u201d Luffy said. He laid back and spread out his arms and legs. \u201cI could just fall asleep like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to sleep this early?\u201d Zoro nodded in the direction of the window. \u201cIt\u2019s only just getting dark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy closed his eyes and patted the space next to him. \u201cCome feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro sat on the edge of the bed, but was quickly pulled backwards as Luffy wrapped an arm around his waist. Zoro lay flat on his back with Luffy\u2019s arm resting over his stomach; he put his arms behind his head and watched as the candles in the chandelier flickered.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is pretty comfy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cTold you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rolled onto his side and watched Zoro\u2019s face. Zoro turned to him. \u201cSomething on my face?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust this,\u201d Luffy said, and reached across. He cupped Zoro\u2019s cheek and ran his thumb gently along the scar over his eye. Zoro eased into the touch. \u201cYou\u2019re hiding cool eye powers, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro laughed. \u201cMaybe.\u201d He used his finger to trace the scar on Luffy\u2019s chest. \u201cWhat are you hiding, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy frowned and tilted his head slightly. \u201cNothing\u2026 as far as I know.\u201d He yawned and rested his hand on Zoro\u2019s chest. \u201cSleep?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro closed his eyes. \u201cYeah,\u201d he said. Luffy shuffled closer and threw his leg over him before closing his eyes.<\/p>\n

When morning came around, Zoro was awoken by two things. One: the sunlight beaming in through the window, and two: the incoherent mumblings of Luffy. He had no idea what Luffy was rambling on about, but he was fully aware of how Luffy was pressed up against his back, effectively spooning him. Zoro didn\u2019t move, though. He merely closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep.<\/p>\n

Half an hour later, Sanji kicked open their door. \u201cI knew it!\u201d he hollered, pointing at Luffy and Zoro, and dropping the towels and clothes he had in his hand.<\/p>\n

Luffy opened his eyes and rubbed them. \u201cSanji?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIgnore him,\u201d Zoro said, unmoving.<\/p>\n

The rest of the crew came in behind Sanji. \u201cKnew what?\u201d Franky asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose two! They\u2019re, you know,\u201d Sanji said and made a vague gesture with his hands. Franky tilted his head. \u201cI can\u2019t say it! There are ladies present!\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro sat up and glared at Sanji. \u201cGet your mind out of the gutter, shit-cook,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami smiled, but it was a smile the crew knew not to mess with. \u201cNow, now, Sanji-kun. There are ladies present,\u201d she said, her voice laced with sarcasm. She pulled on his arm, gaining all his attention, and walked him out of the room. \u201cWe\u2019ll leave you two to get changed.\u201d The rest of the crew followed.<\/p>\n

With a yawn, Luffy sat up and stretched his arms out. \u201cI slept so well!\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro smiled. \u201cMe too.\u201d He eyed the pile of clothes and towels Sanji had left by the door. \u201cI suppose we should get ready.\u201d Luffy hummed. They got up, grabbed the clean clothes and towels, and headed to the communal bathroom.<\/p>\n

Luffy and Zoro caught up with the others downstairs having breakfast. No one said a word about the morning\u2019s events. Well, that was until Chopper asked, \u201cDid you sleep well?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cSure did!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanji snickered. Zoro\u2019s jaw clenched before he leaned over the table and grabbed him by the collar.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is your problem?\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t have one, but seems like you do, little spoon,\u201d Sanji said.<\/p>\n

Zoro shoved Sanji backwards. \u201cSays you.\u201d Sanji landed on his ass.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat’s that meant to mean, huh?\u201d he said as he got back up. He wiped his hands on his pants and reached over to grab Zoro but was stopped when Robin summoned two arms and pulled him back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s all the fuss about?\u201d King Novo said as he approached the table. \u201cIs the food not to your liking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it\u2019s great. Thank you,\u201d Nami said. She gestured to Sanji and Zoro. \u201cDon\u2019t mind those two. They bicker all the time. You get used to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I see.\u201d King Novo turned to Luffy, who was busy stuffing bread into his mouth. \u201cHow long will you and your crew be staying?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy turned to Nami. \u201cThe log pose ready?\u201d he asked. Nami nodded. \u201cWe explore today and leave tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re welcome to stay longer,\u201d King Novo said, but Luffy was more interested in Usopp\u2019s breakfast.<\/p>\n

The crew split up into groups of three. Luffy, Chopper, and Zoro in one, Robin, Nami, and Brook in another, and Sanji, Usopp, and Franky in the last.<\/p>\n

“We’ll all meet back at the castle for dinner,” Nami said. Everyone nodded, except for Robin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait,\u201d Robin said, \u201cI\u2019d really love to see one of the shrines. Could I join Luffy\u2019s group?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brook gasped. \u201cDo you not like me, Robin-san? I promise I won\u2019t ask you to show me your panties.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami frowned. \u201cI thought you were gonna look for treasure with us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA treasure hunt?\u201d Chopper stepped forward. \u201cThat sounds fun! I\u2019ll swap with you, Robin! That okay, Nami?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, sure,\u201d Nami said but she didn\u2019t tear her eyes away from Robin.<\/p>\n

Luffy’s group ventured into the forest, walking along an undefined foot-path made from many walkers going the same route. It led to one of the Novon shrines on the island. The shrine promised ancient scripture, antique weapons, and even monkeys. It was a bit of a trek to get there, but the three soldiered on. At one point, a snake slithered around Luffy’s ankle. Luffy remained oblivious to it until Robin summoned arms to remove it.<\/p>\n

When they finally arrived outside the shrine, they were greeted with a nod by a short, elderly man dressed in white robes. “Welcome, young ones,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Hello,” Robin said.<\/p>\n

Luffy whipped his head from left to right. “Where are the monkeys?” As if on cue, a small baby one dropped onto his head. “Eh!? Where did you come from?”<\/p>\n

The elder chuckled and pointed up. Above them, large tree branches intertwined and left little room for sun to shine through. A few monkeys could be seen sitting; a smaller one was busy whacking another with a twig.<\/p>\n

“Cool!” Luffy said. The monkey on his head jumped down to the ground, grabbed hold of Luffy’s bag, and ran off to the trunk of one of the large trees shading them. It climbed the tree with ease, even holding the bag.<\/p>\n

Luffy gaped. “Oi! My lunch is in there!” he said, but the monkey was already hidden among the leaves of the tree. Luffy pouted before rolling his shoulders back. He shook out his arms. One arm reached behind him to hold onto a boulder. Once he had a firm hold on it he launched his other arm high into the tree. He managed to wrap his arm around a thick branch at the top. He grinned at Robin and Zoro.<\/p>\n

“Luffy!” Zoro said, but it was too late; Luffy let go of the rock keeping him grounded. He was flung up high into the tree, among the monkeys\u2019 den. Zoro just shook his head, but he was smiling. Robin chuckled.<\/p>\n

The monkeys were crowding Luffy fast, though, and he lost sight of the one with his bag. Robin didn’t, though. The monkey was distancing itself from the crowd. Robin summoned arms and attempted to reclaim the bag from the monkey. The monkey wasn\u2019t giving it up, though, and it turned into a match of tug-o-war.<\/p>\n

“Luffy, look for my arms!” Robin said. But the monkeys had completely surrounded him; he could not be seen.<\/p>\n

When Luffy didn’t immediately respond, Zoro went to unsheathe his sword, smirking. “I’ve been itching for a fight, and these monkeys kind of remind me of my time training,” he said.<\/p>\n

The elder waved his arms about and walked up to him as quickly as he could, shaking his head. “No, you mustn’t! They are sacred animals.”<\/p>\n

“Tch.” Zoro released his grip on his sword handle. “Oi, Luffy. Get your ass out here now,” he said.<\/p>\n

Robin continued to pull the bag from the monkey. A bead of sweat ran down her forehead. \u201cStronger than I thought,\u201d she said. She smiled, ever so sweetly, before summoning a third arm. She began to tickle the monkey, who quickly let go of the bag to fend her off. Robin\u2019s summoned arms let the bag drop from the tree; it fell into Zoro\u2019s arms.<\/p>\n

Luffy\u2019s laughter erupted from the trees and the monkeys began to dispel. A pair of arms shot out from among the tree leaves and the hands grabbed hold of Zoro’s shoulders. Before Zoro could react, Luffy came flying towards him. Zoro screwed his eyes shut and braced for impact. But it never came, thanks to Robin\u2019s quick thinking; she had summoned arms to shield Zoro\u2019s head and hold Luffy\u2019s at a distance. Fortunately, their heads didn\u2019t collide, but Luffy had somehow managed to wrap his legs around Zoro\u2019s waist.<\/p>\n

Zoro opened his eyes. Robin\u2019s summoned arms disappeared and Zoro was face to face with Luffy, mere centimetres apart. Luffy clung to him and grinned. “Hello,” he said.<\/p>\n

Zoro smiled and pinched Luffy’s cheeks. “Hey,” he said.<\/p>\n

A cough interrupted them. The elder man smiled and gestured to the staircase beyond the trees. “The shrine awaits you.”<\/p>\n

Luffy hopped off of Zoro and grabbed his bag from Robin. They climbed the few stairs and jaws dropped. The shrine was beautiful. It was framed by four gold pillars and in the center of it stood a gold statue of a woman with a gaze so fierce it was intimidating. Rows of colourful flowers, from daisies to daffodils, surrounded the statue. Wooden lattices, with grapevines woven through, joined the pillars into an open-front enclosure.<\/p>\n

“It’s lovely, isn’t it?” came an unfamiliar voice. Two women in long white robes emerged from behind the shrine, arms linked; a bald man, dressed the same, followed behind with his nose in the air.<\/p>\n

“It’s beautiful,” Robin said. Her eyes travelled to some of the engraved text at the bottom of the statue, and she frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d one of the ladies asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just wondering, do you know what this says?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man snorted. \u201cDuh. Everyone knows what it says.\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger of the two women rolled her eyes. \u201cDon\u2019t mind him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s just bitter after hearing your captain is already promised to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro crossed his arms. \u201cWhat\u2019s that got to do with him?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s face went red. \u201cNothing!\u201d<\/p>\n

The other woman cackled. \u201cHe thought he would have a chance with your navigator!\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin chuckled. \u201cHighly unlikely. Even if we were stuck on this island.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo cruel,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n

The older woman pointed to the engraved text that had captivated Robin. \u201cThe larger text on the top line says: \u2018In unity, strength; in understanding, harmony.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger woman nodded. \u201cAnd the chunk underneath that says: \u2018The deep root and the spreading branch is where true peace dwells; to grow forever, with no intention of harm, only to offer a place to rest, a stable earth.\u2019 The statue is of Lira, the founder of this island and tribe. Beautiful, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Very,\u201d Robin said. \u201cDo you mind if we take a look around? The gardens up here look wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut of course! If there\u2019s anything you need, please feel free to find us in the cottage \u2014 it\u2019s the only building up here, you can\u2019t miss it,\u201d the younger woman said. Her eyes widened. \u201cOh, and please call me Serena.\u201d She gestured to the other two, \u201cBaba, Mindo, and I are the priests responsible for maintaining this shrine.\u201d She withdrew a pamphlet from inside her robe and handed it to Robin.<\/p>\n

Baba smiled while Mindo kept sneaking glances between Luffy and Zoro. He looked away when Zoro caught him. Zoro frowned. He exhaled and reached for Luffy\u2019s hand and intertwined their fingers. Luffy was warm and smiled at him. Zoro\u2019s cheeks lit up and he smiled back.<\/p>\n

They followed the path around the shrine; it led to the flower gardens. In the distance was a small quaint cottage, just as Serena had said.<\/p>\n

Flower beds were aligned on either side of the path. The vivid pink carnations flourished under the sun and scents of vanilla and honey drifted on the breeze from the delicate honeysuckles. They arrived at the sunflowers, vibrant and yellow, and Robin hummed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you notice anything peculiar on the way here?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, not that I\u2019m aware of,\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike what?\u201d Luffy said.<\/p>\n

Robin\u2019s eyes travelled to the cottage where the priests had retreated to. \u201cLarge hoof prints. Recent. Crossing the path we took through the forest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHuh? But the only animals they have here are the sacred monkeys,\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

Robin smiled. \u201cExactly.\u201d She turned and slowly walked back along the path.<\/p>\n

Luffy and Zoro looked at one another, brows furrowed in confusion.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobin! Wait up!\u201d Luffy called. He and Zoro broke into a jog to catch up with her.<\/p>\n

They pulled up alongside her. \u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d Zoro asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll explain when we get back to the others,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

As they walked past the shrine, she paused to take another look at the ancient text. Luffy looked to Zoro, who just shrugged.<\/p>\n

They walked past the monkeys\u2019 trees \u2014 Luffy made sure to keep a tight grip on his bag \u2014 and back along the path they came. It was lucky they had Robin to lead, even if they were just following a path. Zoro\u2019s sense of direction would most likely lead them astray, and Luffy wasn\u2019t much better.<\/p>\n

Robin came to an abrupt stop. Luffy walked right into her back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy\u2019d you stop?\u201d Luffy asked around a mouthful of his sandwich.<\/p>\n

She pointed at the ground: hoof prints were visible in the dirt. They were much bigger than Chopper\u2019s. They must have been fresh because they had stamped over the footprints Robin, Luffy, and Zoro left on their way to the shrine.<\/p>\n

Luffy swallowed the remainder of his sandwich. \u201cThis means they have meat, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would think so,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cGood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

They made it back into town mid-afternoon and met up with the rest of the crew at the castle. Nami took in Luffy\u2019s disheveled appearance. \u201cWhy am I not surprised?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEh?\u201d Luffy looked down his body. He was covered in scratches and his clothes had several rips. \u201cIt was the monkey\u2019s fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami just shook her head. Luffy was hopeless.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should disinfect those scratches,\u201d Chopper said. He took his bag off his back and looked through it before withdrawing a mini first-aid kit. He approached Luffy. \u201dWhat happened with the monkey?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStole my bag. Had to get it back,\u201d Luffy said, while Chopper took a look at his arms. \u201cI\u2019m fine, Chopper. These little scratches are nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s for me to decide,\u201d Chopper said. He opened his first-aid kit and covered his hooves in alcohol-based sanitiser, then he took out some antiseptic wipes and got to work on wiping Luffy\u2019s scratches. Luffy sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Robin-chan! I was just telling Nami-san about this lovely ice-cream parlour I saw on the way through town. Would you care to join us?\u201d Sanji said.<\/p>\n

Nami stared at him, eyebrow raised. \u201cUs?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course!\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin smiled. \u201cIce-cream would be nice.\u201d Sanji flailed but stopped when she added, \u201cI think we should all go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanji sighed. \u201cOkay, fine. We\u2019ll all go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYosh! Ice-cream!\u201d Luffy said and punched his arm in the air.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuffy! Don\u2019t move!\u201d Chopper said as he finished up wiping Luffy\u2019s scratches.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeh, sorry Chopper. And thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chopper shook his head but he was grinning. \u201cDammit, don\u2019t think your words make me happy or anything!\u201d he said, and packed away his first-aid kid. Luffy just laughed and clapped him on the shoulder.<\/p>\n

Luffy stood up and turned to the crew. \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAye, Captain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, it didn\u2019t take long for those wanting ice-cream to be served. The crew voted Luffy to go last since he would most likely devour his so fast and end up stealing everyone else\u2019s. Nami ordered mint chocolate chip, Robin a raspberry ripple, Sanji vanilla, Chopper bubblegum, Zoro green tea, Usopp toffee, and Luffy cookies and cream. He wanted to order a combination of flavours, but Nami cut him off and reluctantly handed the cashier the beri before he could.<\/p>\n

Luffy came bounding over with ice-cream cone in hand. \u201cYum!\u201d he said and took another lick of his ice-cream.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go somewhere quiet,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

Luffy\u2019s mouth formed an O. \u201cThat\u2019s right, Robin says\u2014\u201d He was cut short by a summoned hand covering his mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomewhere quiet it is, then. What does it matter to me? I don\u2019t have ears. Yohoho!\u201d Brook said.<\/p>\n

In the end, they decided the Sunny would be best.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo. What\u2019s up, Robin?\u201d Nami said; the crew was gathered in the galley, around the dining table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been cursed,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuh?\u201d Usopp said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember the text engraved on the wall at the castle dining hall?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah\u2026 Ancient scripture, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin nodded. \u201cIt mentions a curse. I wasn\u2019t certain until Luffy, Zoro, and I went to the shrine today; the shrine had a very detailed explanation of the curse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Usopp put up his hand, signalling Robin to stop. \u201cWait\u2026 I thought you couldn\u2019t read it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou underestimate Robin\u2019s knowledge and foresight,\u201d Sanji said. He placed a cigarette between his lips, flicked open his lighter, and lit it. \u201cObviously something about it seemed off, so she played ignorant.\u201d He took a puff and slowly exhaled. \u201cRight?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cExplains why you wanted to go with Luffy and Zoro,\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

Franky leaned forward in his chair. \u201cWhat\u2019s the curse then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was hard to decipher at first; the phrasing of it was ambiguous due to the ancient vernacular used. It was almost like a riddle. I was lucky enough to receive this information pamphlet from Serena,\u201d Robin withdrew a piece of paper from her pocket, and smoothed it out on the table. \u201cThe literal translation is, \u2018Marry yourself either to the ocean or to the land, either free or bound. In your troth, taste water or taste blood. But know this choice snares you and may you never be freed of it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Usopp crossed his arms. \u201cWhat\u2019s that meant to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure at first, but when I thought about something that was inscribed on the wall in the castle, it started to make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was on the wall then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFriend first, stomach second, or reap the curse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy frowned. \u201cI don\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin smiled. \u201cFrom what I know of the language and now know of the island, my interpretation of the curse is, in simple terms, eat meat \u2014 of creatures that dwell on land \u2014 and you\u2019re trapped here forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami, Usopp, and Chopper cried, \u201cWe\u2019ve been cursed!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could be stuck here forever,\u201d Robin said with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobin, don\u2019t joke like that! This is serious,\u201d Usopp said.<\/p>\n

Luffy stood. \u201cI don\u2019t believe in curses. They\u2019re stupid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more, Luffy. You\u2019ll want to hear this,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

Usopp, Chopper, and Nami clung to one another. \u201cMore!?\u201d they cried.<\/p>\n

Luffy sat back down. \u201cWhat else then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis part isn\u2019t so scary, at least not for you three,\u201d she said, nodding at Usopp, Chopper, and Nami. \u201cBut there were hoofprints crossing the path in the forest. Remember, Luffy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yeah! You said there was more meat, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin nodded. \u201cKing Novo lied about the meat shortage here. My guess is that he lives in fear of the curse. He does import meat from other islands, but has never eaten it himself, and cannot bring himself to personally kill any that live on this island. He only ever feeds it to those he wants to trap. In this case: Luffy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro huffed. \u201cOf course. That stupid King wants you to marry his daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy laughed. \u201cI\u2019m not staying on this island!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami tapped her fingers on the table. Her nails made a slight clacking noise. \u201cWhat\u2019s the plan then, Luffy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sticking to the original plan. We leave tomorrow, as soon as we\u2019re done resupplying,\u201d Luffy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to confront the King?\u201d Brook asked.<\/p>\n

Luffy shrugged. \u201cHe did give us a lot of meat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo trap us!\u201d Usopp said.<\/p>\n

Luffy stretched his arms out. \u201cWhatever happens, happens.\u201d He stood up. \u201cLet\u2019s go. We\u2019re done here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone got to their feet and followed Luffy out of the galley.<\/p>\n

The evening was uneventful. They had dinner in the castle, a bit later than they had the previous night, and Luffy didn\u2019t even complain about the lack of meat. He was tempted to, given what they had found out, but the fish had quickly distracted him.<\/p>\n

It was a little after midnight when the crew finally called it a night and, while Zoro prided himself on not being a lightweight when it came to alcohol, even he had his limits. He was the good type of tipsy, where everything was funny and the world was perfect. At one stage, Luffy lost sight of him when they headed to their room. Luffy turned around, though, and saw Zoro heading in the opposite direction. Luffy laughed and ran up to him, linking their arms together. There went his theory that drunk Zoro might have a better sense of direction than sober Zoro.<\/p>\n

As they approached the bedroom door, Zoro leaned into Luffy. \u201cYou\u2019re the best captain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Luffy laughed and opened the door, following Zoro into the room. \u201cI\u2019m your only captain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro let himself fall flat on the bed, limbs stretched out claiming it all. \u201cThe only captain I\u2019ll ever want and need,\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

Luffy changed out of the guest clothes Sanji had provided them. They were a bit ripped and dirty, thanks to the day\u2019s events, but they could still be salvaged. He finished changing into the guest pyjamas. He ran his hands down them one last time, admiring how soft they were.<\/p>\n

He turned around and faced Zoro, who was openly looking at him. His cheeks were flushed and he wore an ever so slight smile. Luffy joined him on the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re drunk,\u201d Luffy said, but there was no judgment in his tone.<\/p>\n

Zoro rested an arm behind his head and grabbed hold of Luffy\u2019s hand with the other. He gently squeezed it. \u201cOnly slightly. Doesn\u2019t make what I said untrue, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy leaned over Zoro and gazed into his eyes, searching. Zoro tilted his chin up, like he was challenging him. Luffy let go of Zoro\u2019s hand and placed it on Zoro\u2019s cheek. \u201cYou were first,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Zoro closed his eyes and leaned into the touch. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t regret a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d Luffy leaned down and placed a kiss, so soft and gentle, to Zoro\u2019s lips. It was far better than their staged one; it was real. When Luffy pulled back, only by mere centimetres, he said, \u201cStay by my side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro didn\u2019t hesitate for a second. \u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

After breakfast the next morning, the crew split up into threes and went into town to resupply. Sanji, Brook, and Robin were on food; Chopper, Nami, and Zoro were on medical supplies; Franky, Usopp, and Luffy were on tools and materials.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that everything?\u201d Zoro asked as he lifted up a handful of bags in either hand; they had visited a lot of shops. Had Zoro had it his way, they would\u2019ve been done after the first.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust about!\u201d Chopper said, looking at his list. \u201cI only need a few small things, but Nami and I can handle them if you want to take that stuff to the ship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay. Will meet you back there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t get lost,\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHa ha, real funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami grinned.<\/p>\n

Zoro tried his best to heed the advice, but unsurprisingly, he got lost. It was inevitable, really. He found himself down an empty alleyway. He turned around to retrace his steps when something smacked him right in the face. It wasn\u2019t strong enough to budge him or drop his bags, though, so when his vision returned and he saw what it was, he was pissed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the fuck?\u201d he said, as he turned around on the spot. He was surrounded by five strangers, all looking ready for a fight. He couldn\u2019t tell which one he\u2019d collided with, but he was aware that none of them were strong enough to have a noticeable haki.<\/p>\n

When no one said anything, Zoro dropped his bags and smirked. \u201cDon\u2019t come crying to me later.\u201d<\/p>\n

The five attackers came rushing towards him. Zoro unsheathed his swords and dodged out of the way of the first person and drove the end of Shusui\u2019s handle into the back of the person\u2019s head. It sent the attacker stumbling over, taking another attacker with them. Zoro thrust his elbow backwards, hitting an attacker behind him right in the gut. He capitalised on the moment by slashing his sword through the air, creating enough air pressure to send the attacker flying backwards.<\/p>\n

The final two attackers simultaneously leaped towards him. Zoro ducked under one set of fists and blocked the other attacker\u2019s dagger with his sword. He managed to send the attacker flying back just by the force behind his sword alone. The final attacker stumbled backwards after seeing the rest of the group down and landed on their butt. The attacker desperately tried to back away from Zoro but Zoro held Shusui at their throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d Zoro asked. The other attackers came to grovel at his feet.<\/p>\n

The attacker swallowed. \u201cN-nothing,\u201d he said, his eyes bulging as Zoro moved Shusui ever so closer. \u201cOkay! I\u2019ll tell you!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMake it quick,\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

\u201cK-king Novo\u2026 He wants Luffy to m-marry Princess Isa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro frowned. \u201cWhat?\u201d But his eyes widened as realisation dawned on his face. They still believed he was Luffy\u2019s partner. Well, it wasn\u2019t a total lie, but Zoro found their relationship too complicated to adequately label.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuffy\u2019s reputation could i-improve the island\u2019s economy,\u201d the attacker said, but it sounded more like a suggestion.<\/p>\n

Something didn\u2019t sit right with Zoro. There had to be more to it than that. \u201cWhy is he so persistent?\u201d When no one responded Zoro tilted Shisui, angling the sword closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cT-the Marines!\u201d one attacker spoke up, while the others gasped. \u201cThey know you\u2019re here and have promised double his bounty for capture.\u201d<\/p>\n

His brow furrowed, Zoro took a moment to process the information. If the Marines were offering double Luffy\u2019s bounty then that explained a few things, like King Novo\u2019s persistence. Trying to get rid of Zoro, or any of Luffy\u2019s nakama, was the easiest way to get to Luffy, so of course they were after him.<\/p>\n

He looked down at the attackers and withdrew his sword. \u201cI\u2019ll let you go this time, but come near me again and I won\u2019t be so kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

A chorus of \u201cYes!\u201d and \u201cThank you!\u201d resounded. They scrambled away as fast as mice and Zoro regretted not asking one of them for directions. He sighed and sheathed his swords. A quick inspection of the bags showed that nothing had broken, so he picked them up and headed in the direction he believed he came.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until mid-afternoon when Zoro made it back to the ship. He was the last one back.<\/p>\n

\u201cZoro!\u201d Luffy yelled. He grabbed hold of the rail of the ship and flung himself down to the pier. \u201cWhat took you so long?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGot lost,\u201d Zoro said. Luffy nodded even though he had not paid the slightest bit of attention. He linked an arm around Zoro\u2019s and launched his arm back up and around the Sunny\u2019s railing. Zoro opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted as he and Luffy went flying through the air, thanks to Luffy\u2019s rubber body, and came crashing down onto the deck of the Sunny. They landed flat on their faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m broken,\u201d Zoro said and slowly sat up. Luffy sprung up, unfazed in the slightest, laughing and patting him on the shoulder. \u201cNot all of us can be thrown around like rubber!\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy tilted his head. \u201cI thought Zoro liked being thrown ar\u2014\u201c he said, but was cut short by Zoro\u2019s hand covering his mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, what was that?\u201d Sanji said as he approached the two of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing!\u201d Zoro said, his cheeks red.<\/p>\n

Sanji took a puff from his cigarette and stared down his nose at Zoro. \u201cExplains a few things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any embarrassment Zoro felt quickly evaporated. He got to his feet and went for Sanji\u2019s collar, but he stopped short when he noticed a huge tentacle draped over the side railing of the Sunny.<\/p>\n

Sanji raised an eyebrow and turned to see what had captured Zoro\u2019s attention. Luffy stood up next to them both.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeheh. What do you think?\u201d Luffy asked, hands on his hips.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I even want to know?\u201d Zoro said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a parting gift for the island!\u201d Luffy said, like it was the greatest thing in existence. Nami called for Luffy. He left Sanji and Zoro to join her.<\/p>\n

Zoro approached the tentacle. He leaned over the railing and his brows shot up. The huge tentacle was still attached to a giant squid that floated next to the ship. Zoro poked the tentacle. It moved, despite the harpoon driven through its head.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s dead,\u201d Sanji said.<\/p>\n

Zoro poked it again but then looked to Sanji as footsteps sounded along the pier. He shook his head. \u201cForget this. We need to get out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanji took a puff from his cigarette. \u201cWhy the rush?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Marines know we\u2019re here,\u201d Zoro said in hushed tones. The footsteps drew closer.<\/p>\n

Sanji\u2019s eyes widened for a fraction of the second, but before he could respond a familiar voice filled the air. \u201cStraw Hat Luffy, must you and your crew leave so soon?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy ran back to the side of the ship and looked down at the pier. King Novo stood, dressed in the same velvet red robe he wore upon meeting them. Beads of sweat ran down his forehead \u2014 Luffy wondered if he was overheating. Beside him stood his daughter, more appropriately dressed in a modest orange summer dress that went just past her knees.<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cYep!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLuffy, come back here! It\u2019s still playing up,\u201d Nami said, her voice unusual with its tone of uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Robin stood, placing the local Novon newspaper she had acquired aside. It hadn\u2019t even been published recently; most likely it had gone out of print due to the lack of interest and visitors. She tucked a strand of hair behind her hair.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the problem, Nami?\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

Nami frowned and gave her log pose two taps. \u201cThe log pose is playing up. It\u2019s been fine until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Usopp paused his tinkering \u2014 he was making Chopper a hoof-proof slingshot \u2014 and looked across at Nami. His eyes were wide and his face pale. \u201cIt\u2019s the curse!\u201d He went ignored by everyone except Chopper who shared his horrified expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be trapped on this island forever!\u201d Chopper cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot helping,\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey raise a good point, though,\u201d Robin said.<\/p>\n

Nami gaped. \u201cHuh?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou ate meat, right?\u201d Robin said. Nami nodded. \u201cI didn\u2019t. Just a theory, but perhaps it would work on my wrist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami\u2019s eyes lit up. \u201cGood idea!\u201d She unstrapped the log pose from her wrist. Robin held out her wrist and Nami fastened it on her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there a problem?\u201d King Novo called from below.<\/p>\n

Zoro walked out of the shade and into King Novo\u2019s view. \u201cNone at all,\u201d he said unable to keep the smirk off his face. All the colour drained from King Novo\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201dEh? Are you okay? You look sick,\u201d Luffy called out as he joined Zoro.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s fine,\u201d Zoro said and folded his arms. \u201cHe\u2019s just happy to see me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs if,\u201d Nami said offhandedly. A grin emerged on her face, though, as she watched the log pose re-calibrate on Robin\u2019s wrist. \u201cIt works!\u201d she said, high-fiving Robin.<\/p>\n

Chopper and Usopp cheered. \u201cWe\u2019re not trapped!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami counted numbers on the ship; everyone was on board. \u201cLuffy. Ready to go?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYup!\u201d Luffy said. He turned away from King Novo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait! You cannot go yet!\u201d King Novo said. His eyes darted around. He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Luffy.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! He\u2019s right. We need to give them the squid!\u201d Luffy said and approached the large tentacle, giving it a friendly pat.<\/p>\n

Chopper changed form and grabbed hold of the cable the harpoon was attached to. \u201cOn it!\u201d He pulled the cable behind him as he walked to the front of the ship. The tentacle fell off the side railing and the squid was dragged through the water. Chopper jumped down onto the pier and pulled the squid up. To his surprise, it wasn\u2019t as heavy as it looked. He dumped it on the pier and wiped his hands together. \u201cThere we go,\u201d he said and jumped back on board the ship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s more than he deserves,\u201d Zoro said. \u201cBut with men so weak maybe this will do them some good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy men are not weak!\u201d King Novo said, fists clenched.<\/p>\n

Zoro raised an eyebrow, challenging. \u201cWell, they didn\u2019t leave a scratch on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy frowned. \u201cWhy would they?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoro hummed. \u201cI wonder. Ask him.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Novo\u2019s eyes darted from side to side and a few more beads of sweat rolled down his face. All eyes were on him, including Princess Isa\u2019s. After a long moment, he glared directly at Zoro. \u201cYou were meant to die!\u201d<\/p>\n

Princess Isa gasped while the crew did a double take. \u201cWait, what?\u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n

Unfazed, King Novo didn\u2019t look away from Zoro. \u201cThose were my best men! What did you do to them?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy raised his hand, indicating to stop, and everyone in the crew stopped what they were doing and went quiet. Luffy stared directly at King Novo. \u201cYou sent men after my nakama?\u201d There was no trace of humour in his voice. King Novo flinched but remained silent.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa turned to face her father. \u201cWhy would you do such a thing!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did it for the sake of the island. For you,\u201d King Novo pleaded. He looked up at Luffy. \u201cBut now I see I am going to have to go for plan B.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nami came to stand next to Luffy and Zoro. \u201cNuh-uh. I don\u2019t think so. We know all about your \u2018curse\u2019,\u201d she said, hands on her hips.<\/p>\n

King Novo\u2019s eyes widened for a fraction of a second. He smirked. \u201cNever matter. I will personally trap you on this island forever!\u201d<\/p>\n

He pushed his daughter back and spread his feet apart. \u201cWitness the power of my devil fruit!\u201d he said, raising his arms. The ground began to shake and cannons slowly emerged, lining the dock, and aimed at the Sunny.<\/p>\n

The crew took up defensive positions. \u201cWhat kind of devil fruit is that?\u201d Sanji asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me show you.\u201d With a click of King Novo\u2019s fingers, the cannons fired. Several cannonballs shot out lightning-fast. Luffy reacted instinctively; he jumped in front of the ship and expanded his belly. The cannonballs landed right in the middle of his rubber stomach. Luffy deflected them easily.<\/p>\n

King Novo\u2019s eyes lit up. \u201cImpressive, Straw Hat! But can you deflect this!\u201d He launched two more projectiles from his cannons, only they were spiked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got \u2018em!\u201d Usopp called. He had retreated to the crow\u2019s nest, equipped with his slingshot. Without missing a beat, Usopp aimed and shot two Pop Greens at the spiked projectiles. Two large carnivorous plants, akin to Venus fly-traps, sprouted and greedily devoured the spikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNice one, Usopp!\u201d Luffy yelled. Usopp grinned and gave him a thumbs up.<\/p>\n

King Novo was unfazed by their deflections. He fired a series of cannonballs, all aimed along the ship. Nami summoned a serious gust of wind and blew them away before they could make impact.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa grabbed hold of her father\u2019s shoulder. \u201cFather! You must stop this! Your obsession with weapons has gone too far!\u201d But King Novo merely shrugged out of her hold and fired more cannonballs at the ship. A crowd started to gather on the dock, well behind the cannons.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay out of this, Isa!\u201d King Novo said. The crazed look in his eyes was still there; he was a man on a mission. More spiked projectiles flew through the air towards the ship. Franky blasted them away with ease.<\/p>\n

\u201cFather, please stop,\u201d Princess Isa said, tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d be wise to listen to her,\u201d Sanji said before kicking through the air, sending a gust of wind to repel an incoming cannonball.<\/p>\n

Luffy frowned. \u201cGive up, old man.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Novo didn\u2019t seem to care, though. He continued with his attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it,\u201d Luffy said. His hands shot out and gripped hold old King Novo\u2019s shoulders. He jumped onto the railing and allowed himself to be pulled in by his stretched rubber arms. King Novo\u2019s eyes went wide but he merely grinned and continued his attacks.<\/p>\n

Luffy collided into King Novo; the force behind him was too great to withstand. King Novo landed on his butt with Luffy on top of him. Luffy sprung up but King Novo was holding onto his wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuffy!\u201d Robin yelled, alarm in her voice. Luffy turned to her, but it proved unwise as King Novo had withdrawn a dagger from his ankle. He drove it towards Luffy\u2019s side and was mere centimetres away when a hand stopped him. Princess Isa had hold of her father\u2019s wrist. Luffy shook free of the King\u2019s hold and stepped away.<\/p>\n

\u201cFather, stop this madness!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not understand!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

She narrowed her eyes and tightened her grip on her father\u2019s wrist until he dropped the dagger. \u201cI am not a child and I do understand. But what you are doing is wrong. Let them go.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crazed look in his eyes started to fade. \u201cB-but the island.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe island will be okay.\u201d Her calm voice belied the anger in her fist.<\/p>\n

King Novo dropped to his knees and let his head fall. \u201cPlease forgive me, Isa. I have brought shame upon our name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Princess Isa kneeled down next to her father. \u201cIt\u2019s okay. Remember what mother would say?\u201d King Novo let out a sob but said nothing. She smiled and tilted her father\u2019s head up. \u201cTogether we can overcome anything.\u201d King Novo devolved into a sobbing mess.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to leave this island, father, and I will find help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

King Novo\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cYou cannot! The curse has trapped you here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luffy huffed and stretched his arms out. \u201cCurses won\u2019t stop any of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murmurs could be heard from the crowd that had gathered.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa raised an eyebrow. \u201cI don\u2019t follow. What curse are you talking about, father?\u201d<\/p>\n

When he didn\u2019t respond, Princess Isa\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cThe meat curse? You\u2019re joking, right?\u201d She rolled her eyes. \u201cYou and the elders are the only ones who believe that old curse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe villagers believe it, too. They only eat food of the sea and of the grass,\u201d King Novo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe villagers do not get offered the chance to eat anything else. You hide all the animals of this land away in private enclosures!\u201d<\/p>\n

There was an audible gasp from the crowd of onlookers. They could be heard mumbling questions. \u201cWhat\u2019s all this about?\u201d and \u201cThe curse isn\u2019t real?\u201d and \u201cThe King hides animals?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know exactly why I have to do that, Isa.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s he talking about?\u201d one onlooker shouted.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa stood up and faced the locals. She glanced down at her father. \u201cIt\u2019s about time they knew the truth.\u201d King Novo gave a subtle nod before he cast his eyes down but didn\u2019t move to get up.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa cleared her throat. \u201cI understand that a lot of you must be very confused right now; I do not blame you. My father\u2026 our King has made some unwise decisions and I can understand if your feelings towards him change after hearing this. But I think it is best you know.\u201d She looked across at the Straw Hats. Nami smiled and nodded. Princess Isa took a deep breath and continued. \u201cThe King has kept livestock hidden away as a last resort for our economy after spending the island\u2019s fortune on acquiring advanced weaponry and the metal-master devil fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a moment of silence but when it was evident that Princess Isa had no more to say cries of outrage broke out from the crowd, along with a collective \u201cboo!\u201d The locals started to rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s our cue to leave,\u201d Nami said. Franky nodded and aimed his robotic fist towards Luffy. It shot out fast and grabbed hold of Luffy\u2019s ankle. Luffy looked down but didn\u2019t have any time to process anything as the robotic hand around his ankle was reeled in; Luffy flailed as he was flown through the air with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsa, will you be okay?\u201d Robin asked.<\/p>\n

Princess Isa nodded. \u201cGo,\u201d she said. She faced the oncoming crowd and whistled. A group of armed men stood guard in front of her.<\/p>\n

Franky\u2019s robotic fist let go of Luffy once he was over the railing and on the deck of the Sunny. He landed flat on his face but there was a grin on his face when he bounced back up. \u201cEverybody ready?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAye, Captain,\u201d the crew echoed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy the squid!\u201d Luffy called out. The giant squid remained lifeless on the pier. It distracted a handful of the locals from their protests as they poked at it cautiously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is the meaning of this?\u201d Princess Isa called out.<\/p>\n

Luffy grinned. \u201cA gift. Thank you for the food!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is enough to feed the village ten times over!\u201d said one of the locals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to have squid for days!\u201d said another.<\/p>\n
