greed

1st May 2012

He’d never asked for much; he’d never needed much.

But he needed you.

He’d never asked for much; instead he was constantly giving.

So why did you leave?

He went out his way to help others. He didn’t want, expect anything in return.

He only wanted you.

He changed lives, improved them. But no matter how many people he helped none of them could help overcome his one failure.

His failure to help you.

You don’t blame him, no one blames him; he’s not at fault. But that doesn’t stop him from blaming himself.

You want him to let go but deep down inside you know he won’t. And as selfish as it is, this fact pleases you.

You don’t deserve his love but cling on to it anyway.

He’s constantly giving and giving. He doesn’t expect much, he never has. Growing up in solitude taught him such. Yet he couldn’t help but want more of you, his first true bond. You were, and still are, the focal point of his insatiable hunger for love, affection. And that hunger will never be truly satiated without you. You’ve left him with an incomplete existence. This you know.

A little bit of love goes a long way with him. Others understand that, but you learnt the hard way. A grin so genuine it’s infectious; a heart so pure despite its past wounds; and a resolve so strong that it’s heartbreaking. Heartbreaking only because of you, and how – as a result of your actions – you’ve only served to strengthen his resolve to unjustifiable lengths.

Well, not unjustifiable to him. Only to you.

But to him you’ll always be worth it. He won’t give up. He won’t admit failure a second time.

Not for you.

You and he both know that there’s no need for concern. After all, it’s inevitable.

He’s never asked for much. But even so, you’d like to give him something.
